AMRUTHAM Amrutha Rao is in his early thirties. It would be unfair to say his IQ too is in the thirties, but not inaccurate to say he is no genius. He runs a small alfresco restaurant on the lawns of his house. It is a two-portion house rented by him and his childhood friend Anji. The restaurant business would have been OK if Amrith wasn't always biting off more than he could chew. Given his talent for taking to ridiculous extremes even a fairly decent idea, imagine what he can do with a harebrained idea to start with! No wonder he is forever getting into a soup. He does manage to get out of the soup though, by getting into a stew.
ANJI Anjaneya Prasad is a few years older than Amrith and is his partner-cum-chef in the restaurant business. He says he was Amrith's classmate in college. Amrith says he was his junior. Amrith's wife says he was her husband's senior. Actually all three are correct. When Amrith first joined college, Anji was his senior. One year later he became a classmate. And in the natural progression of things, another year saw him become a junior. He never did complete his degree, which never came in the way of him considering himself an unparalleled genius. He thinks he knows more about software thane Gates, more about rocket science than Kalam, and more about management than Drucker. His confidence is unlimited, but unfortunately unfounded. Thus he keeps playing Amrith with harebrained schemes to improve business and conquer the world. Which keeps them enslaved to failure.
SANJU Sanjivini, Amrith's wife and the dominant partner in the marriage. She isn't over-smart either, but is a tad overambitious. Which makes her vulnerable to Anji's over-the-top ideas and prod her husband into adopting them.
SHANTHA Shantha is Anji's wife. She works in the accounts section of a Government corporation. She is the one among the foursome who has her feet planted on the ground. She keeps throwing cold water on Anji and Amrith's quixotic ventures; but when did cold logic ever stand a chance against committed stupidity?
APPAJI Appaji is the rapacious owner of their house. He regularly has all his meals at the restaurant, on the house. Not satisfied with the income from the rent, he imposes fines and penalties on his tenants for every imaginable and unimaginable reason. His avariciousness is only matched by his atrocious dress sense.
PARANDHAMAYYA Parandhamayya, the big-whiskered father-in-law of Amrith. He lives in a farm 300 km. away from Mumbai. If he had his way, he would wish to be 3,000 km. away from Amrith. He harbours the strong conviction that his son-in-law is of a strange species not yet identified by zoologists. Since every time they come face to face, Amrith gives him an apoplectic fit, Shivshankar has made it clear that his son-in-law is not welcome into his home, come festival or celebration. But when did a No Entry board stop a virus?
